  2. Review of Last Captains Meetings Notes
    a. NNO Results - There were approximately 40 people who attended this years National Night Out (NNO). We all agreed that next year this event needs to have increased interest and promotion given to it. We are guessing that next year the event will probably be pushed back to the neighborhoods. The Raleigh Police Department was very supportive and you missed the following: DUI Mobile Unit, Canine Unit, Equestrian Patrol, Motorcycle Officer & much more!! During the time span we were there, we estimated 20-30 officers including a visit from Captain Poteat and Police Chief Purlov. We enjoyed the company of other Community Watch Programs and a pot luck dinner.
    b. Confirm Dates - We confirmed the next meeting was September 8, 2003 and the next Community Wide Yard Sale was October 4, 2003 (rain date October 11, 2003).
  3. Balboa Incident Update - Jeannie was looking for an update on the incident reported to the captains. No one had an update and Jeannie said that she would look into it.
  4. July Police Report - Tabitha went over the police stats for the month of July. The major things to point out:
    • A breaking and Entering was reported on the 2900 block of Henslowe Drive. Don Flowers informed us that a window had been broken in a house that was for sale and that nothing was taken.
    • Shots Fired on August 12, 13, and 14. We are informed that if you hear anything that hear's like gunfire to report it to 911. Even if you think the sound is fire works, report this as well.
    • Activity in Orchard Point - multiple breaking and entering, resisting arrest, criminal captured on open warrant arrest. (Even though this isn't in our immediate area, it's right next door.)
  5. Hand Out Flyers?
    a. Hand out half sheets? - We decided it would be best to hand out flyers. Some were hesitant because we are tired of begging people to come who aren't interested. We are going to hand out half sheets of information and want to hand them out at least a week ahead of time. We decided to make special notation of our hot topic, meeting time and place, reduced agenda, and a special note to students and renters.
    b. Discuss areas - We discussed who would be responsible for what area as far as handing flyers out and distributing throughout the watch area.
  6. Meeting Agenda - we discussed the following items be included on the next meetings agenda: meet the candidate, police report, upcoming dates, budget, street signs, committee's, yard sale (collection after yard sale), election information, election registration, update of petition, business cards, and hot topic [Gun Safety].
  7. Basketball Court - Tabitha did some investigation on the basketball court located behind Balboa Road. First off, the area is covered with debris due to bad erosion. We have considered contacting erosion control for the construction site located on the adjacent lot - their erosion control is not working. We found that the property in question is owned by the State of NC. Several people suggested trying to get this annexed into the Parks & Rec Department under the City of Raleigh jurisdiction.
  8. Open Floor - We had several open topics including ideas for upcoming meetings: stranger danger program, fire safety, interact, and hurricane readiness. Tom told us about the Swift Creek Fire Station open house on September 27. Jeannie told us about "Speeder" signs located at the Five Points area of Glenwood Avenue. Several suggested that our group may want to consider a similar grass roots approach to our speeding problem that we get so many complaints about.
  9. Adjourn
